Shaving

Wet shaving VS electric shaving.

When it comes to shaving there are 2 methods to choose. Either using an electric razor (dry) or a manual razor (wet)

So how do you decide which is right for you, or do you just use the method that your dad used.

Below you will find information giving the pros and cons of both systems. This will help you decide which system is best for you.

When considering wet shaving there several different options. You can use a cartridge razor, DE safety razor or cut-throat razor. In this blog I will be considering cartridge and DE razors. The cut-throat is a more specialist razor and is not covered here.

Pros

They provide the closet shave for a longer period than an electric razor. This is because the blades remove the very top layer of dead skin, exposing fresh, new smooth skin. So, the razor will exfoliate while shaving which means there is no need for a facial scrub.

The razors are portable and easy to clean. The blades are easy to replace, especially with the cartridge razor.

Inexpensive to buy. There are many different types of razors available. From cheap plastic razors costing a few pounds, to more expensive DE razors costing upwards of £50. Compared with a quality electric razor it is cheaper.

With a wet shave you achieve a much better experience. It has a different more luxurious feel.

Cons

Using a manual razor will often take longer than using an electric shaver. One of the reasons is because more preparation is needed such as the lathering of soap.

When using a manual razor, you are more prone to cuts and nicks. With experience and a good quality soap or cream the chances of this reduces.

With manual razors you need to consider the on-going cost. Cartridge razor blades can get expensive, but DE razor blades are cheaper. Also, you need to consider the other coast associated with wet shaving, such as your shaving soap or cream.

The Electric Shave

Pros

Shaving with an electric razor tends to be faster. You don’t need to go over the same area as often. There is no preparation needed, you do not need any extra items such as shaving cream, soap or even water. You grab your razor and start to shave.

You can use them anywhere. Most electric razors are cordless, which allows you the flexibility to use it anywhere.

They are easy to use with little technique needed. This means that you could reduce nicks, cuts and ingrown hairs.

It’s easier to control beard length, so you don’t have to be completely clean shaven. Also, many razors have a trimmer attachment. This helps maintain your beard to the desired length.

Cons

The electric razor does not shave as closely as manual razors. This means you will not get that super-smooth finish. Also, you may have to shave more often.

More attention is required when it comes to maintenance and cleaning of the razor.

There is a larger upfront payment with an electric razor. Investing in a good quality long lasting electric razor can save you money over the long term.

With an electric razor there is the possibility that your razor runs out of power mid shave.

Summary

So, in summary the wet shave will give you a better shaving experience. You will achieve a closer smoother shave, but this will take you longer than an electric razor

When considering the cost, the upfront costs of wet shaving are cheaper. Over the long term a good quality electric razor could save you money.
