What shaving cream should I buy?

The first question is: Why use a traditional shaving cream?

Shaving_creamA traditional shaving cream can be used with a brush to produce a thick luxurious later. A lather can still be obtained without the use of a brush. Using a traditional shaving cream will soften your beard and it helps your blade glide over the skin. This makes for a smoother shave with fewer nicks & cuts. If you use a shaving cream from a can you will find over time it dries your skin. With a traditional shaving cream, it will moisturize the skin leaving it soft and smooth.
Creams come in many different fragrances and you will often be able to buy a matching balm or aftershave

What to look for when choosing a cream

1 – Your skin type

If you have sensitive skin look for a cream that is produced for sensitive skin

If you have dry skin, then it is recommended that you look for a cream that has a glycerine base. This will allow the blade to glide over the skin easier.

2 – Ingredients to look out for

Parabens

These are a preservative added to you shaving cream to stop the growth of fungus and bacteria

Parabens applied to the skin may react to ultraviolet radiation and increase DNA damage and skin aging.

There are many reports looking at whether Parabens are carcinogenic, but there has been no causal link found.

SLS

This is a synthetic detergent. They are used to aid in the production of froth. They remove oils from the skin and can cause eye and skin irritation.

If you have sensitive skin, eczema or psoriasis then it is advisable to avoid them.

Look out for these good ingredients. Added natural oils such as jojoba are good for your face as they are not oily.

Added glycerine will help the blade glide over the skin helping to reduce irritation

Country of manufacture

The countries in the EU have much stricter rules on the ingredients that are allowed in shaving creams and other similar products.

Below is a review of 3 of our most popular shaving creams. The DR Harris shaving cream is a luxury brand. Proraso is a value shaving cream and

is ideal for people new to wet shaving. Taylor of Old Bond Street is an excellent every day choice.

scent. Arlington has a clean fresh citrus scent with a hint of fern.

The shaving cream produces one of the best luxury lathers. It allows your blade to glide across your face leading to a smooth and close shave

Proraso shaving cream

This is an Italian company who produced their first pre-shave cream in 1948.

They produce 4 types of creams, with Eucalyptus Oil and Menthol (green tube) considered their general cream. A cream for sensitive skin, a moisturising & nourishing and a protective & moisturising are also available.

The Eucalyptus Oil and Menthol cream leaves a refreshing and tingly feeling on the skin after your shave. It produces a quality later but is not as good as the Taylor of Old Bond Street. We feel that this offers good value for money and is ideal for anyone new to wet shaving.
